About Spinal Injuries AssociationThe Spinal Injuries Association is the peak body for people with a spinal cord injury in Queensland. The Association was formed in 1960 'to provide occupational amenities, assistance and accommodation for people with paraplegia or quadriplegia'. Since that time, the Association has evolved into an organisation that provides a range of services across Queensland for people with a spinal cord injury; predominantly those with paraplegia, quadriplegia and the late effects of polio. We help people rebuild their lives; advocate for greater independence, equity and choice; and present a state-wide injury prevention program to school students. Working co-operatively with the community, business and government, the Association represents more than 1,500 members state wide and is widely respected for its specialist knowledge of the needs of people with a spinal cord injury. Its advice is sought by individuals, business and government at all levels. The Association is a not-for-profit, membership-based organisation. It is registered as an incorporated Association and is recognised by Government as a Charity and public benevolent institution. The Association supports equity and equal opportunity in areas such as accommodation, transport, education, employment and recreation. The Spinal Injuries Association has a proactive approach to highlighting disability issues and raising awareness in the community. The Association provides a number of services, some of which are funded by Federal and State governments. The other services are funded by donations, bequests and on a fee-for-service basis. The policies and procedures referenced in this handbook relate to the services offered by Spinal Injuries Association throughout Queensland. Operating from offices in Brisbane and Townsville, these services include:
