Welcome to Country Songwoman Maroochy, Songwoman & Law-woman of the Turrbal People - the original inhabitants of Brisbane, and the Dippil People of the Sunshine Coast area. She is a direct descendant of the man nicknamed “the Duke of York” by the early settlers in Brisbane in 1823. The “the Duke of York” was the Chief of the Old Brisbane tribe (the Turrbal People). When Songwoman Maroochy performs the Traditional Welcome to Country she asks the Turrbal ancestors and the Almighty, in song, to bless that particular gathering and be with everyone throughout the event.
