Ron is a Principal and Health Sector Leader at HASSELL with over twent-five years experience in the health and master planning,architectural design and documentation of health care facilities within Australia and Asia, both in the public and private sectors.  His experience in the development of public and private Healthcare facilities range from thedevelopment of asset strategic plans for a number of regions within NSW , to master plans, feasibility studies and project definition plans for health care facilities ranging from major tertiary hospitals to small primary care centres.Currently Ron is the Co-Project Director of GCUH Architecture for the Gold Coast University Hospital.This role commenced with site selection process to currently in the Construction documentation phase of the $1.5Bn project.

Ron recently spent 4 weeks in the USA and Europe, reviewing health care facilities internationally to understand international trends.

Jane Carthey is Associate Professor and Director of the Centre for Health Assets Australasia, an UNSW Research Centre hosted by the Faculty of the Built Environment. The Centre’s research agenda includes the design, procurement and management of health facilities. Its major project is the development and ongoing review of web-based Australasian health facility guidelines funded by all the Australian States and Territories, and New Zealand.
An architect and project manager with over 25 years of experience in architectural practice and academia, Jane has worked extensively on health, aged care, educational and other institutional projects and has been based at UNSW since 2002. Her primary interest is in improving the quality of physical environments that support effective delivery of healthcare.

Phillip Carruthers is an Associate Director for Norman Disney & Young (NDY), Consulting Engineers in Brisbane having joined the practice in 1985.  He has been associated with the building services industry in contracting and consulting since 1969 in both NSW and Queensland.

He has a specific interest in sustainable design and eco efficiency and is a contributor to the NDY Environment research and development group.

Phillip is a member of ASHRAE and a Presidential Fellow Member of AIRAH and is a past contributor to IHEA National Conferences.

He is a current member of the Sustainable Development and Management Committee of the Property Council of Australia, Queensland Division.

Marks Background is in chemistry. Starting his working life in the lab, be worked in the plastics industry for 6 years whilst he completed his Honours Degree in chemistry and a certificate in management. He branched into the environmental field and became an environmental scientist for two major companies. He briefly became a consultant, again in the environmental field before commencing employment in waste management and treatment plant design. He has been with Nalco for 6 years.

Jim has undertaken numerous health management and project development roles since 1971.  Public and private health sector appointments in Australia include engineering services management, general management and capital works planning and project management at rural, major metropolitan and major teaching hospitals. 

Jim has provided health service planning and capital development services to private hospital developments in Thailand and Indonesia, Department of Human Services Victoria and the Kazakstan and Mongolian Ministries of Health on behalf of the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. He has also provided service development project management in Japan and hospital facilities management and general services quality assurance standards and guidelines throughout Lebanon.

Middle East assignments recently undertaken in the United Arab Emirates were Project Coordinator for the Sharjah Teaching Hospital with his most recent assignment being to participate in a major review of Dubai’s public health care system by carrying asset and major infrastructure, energy management and staff accommodation building fabric and amenities due diligence surveys and preparation of associated reports.

Simon is a Principal Scientist with the Buildings Applied Research and Sustainability team, a specialist group dealing with non-standard engineering projects, sustainable and energy-efficient design, performance-based car park studies, building simulation, and computational fluid dynamics. He provides leadership and support for the computational fluid dynamics team, and national leadership for strategic research.

Simon holds a first class honours degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of New South Wales, specialising in geophysical fluid dynamics and simulation. He has 18 years of experience in computational and mathematical modelling in several disciplines, including the ocean-atmosphere dynamics and the physics of climate change; wind effects; pollutant dispersal; biomedical engineering; data analysis and general fluid dynamics.

Focussed on the high technology manufacturing, research and development, health and defence sectors, S2F has an internationally recognised reputation for innovative design and responsible economic and environmental solutions.  S2F operates in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Shanghai, and employs specialist architects, interior designers, health planners, building services & process engineers and validation specialists working across Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Brad is a specialist mechanical and building services engineer with extensive experience in the technically challenging and complicated building types and systems for health, research and industrial facilities. Brad George is responsible for the design and documentation of Mechanical Services, and experienced in all phases of Building Engineering Services, including master planning, design, documentation, design reviews, services during construction, commissioning, cost estimating, value management, life cycle analysis and ESD evaluation and design. 

Brad’s current projects include the Knowledge Based Research & Business (KBRB) Project, Coopers Plains Site currently nearing completion. The Knowledge Based Research and Business Project (KBRB) is the keystone of the Queensland Smart State strategy and comprises two new research precincts in Brisbane which will re-locate 1286 scientists and support staff from ten existing sites around Brisbane to two strategic locations.

Brad is also Senior Mechanical Engineer for the $179 million, new state of the art 13 floor research facility at the QIMR site at Herston, Brisbane.  The new building will enable QIRM to increase its capacity to perform world-class medical research aimed at improving the health of all people.

Brad’s health experience includes Senior Mechanical Engineer for the Gold Coast University Hospital, a total project cost of $1.549 billion, 750-bed tertiary hospital will open its doors by the end of 2012 as part of an exciting health precinct being developed to expand clinical services for South East Queensland.  The new Gold Coast University Hospital will offer a higher level and greater range of complex care to its patients, delivering specialist cancer and cardiac services, neurosciences, trauma and neonatal intensive care in a world-class facility that integrates patient care, teaching and research.

Brad international experience includes projects such as University College of Dublin – Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.  Similar Australian projects include his role as the Process Engineer for Centre for Advanced Animal Science (CAAS) project, U.Q. Gatton Campus. He was responsible for Waste Treatment Services design and documentation, which included large-scale chemical treatment of reticulated waste from the animal research facilities.

A critical part of the modern laboratory and health facility is the Reverse Osmosis water system, as part of Brad’s major project experience he has been responsible for design and installation of numerous RO Water Renal Systems including Redlands, Redcliffe, Robina, Logan, Caloundra , Rockhampton and the Gold Coast University , Hospitals.

Phil has been associated with air technology in one way or another for around 40 years, and for the last 20 years has been closely involved with vacuum pumps and systems.

From the early beginnings a fully qualified pneumatics and hydraulics engineer and diesel mechanic. At one stage even specialising in conversions of internal combustion engines, to LP Gas. He has also worked with extreme pressure gases as used in scuba diving and industrial bottled gas. Phil has previously worked in a sales field and for the last 19 years with vacuum pumps and medical suction Plants.  Phil is currently operating his own business in supply and design of quality vacuum technology and medical suction Plants.  During this time he has worked on integrating variable frequency drives for use in Medical Suction Plant

Thomas Heine studied Electrical engineering and automation engineering at University in Mosbach, Germany. He has worked with ebm-papst for 5 years having experience of air movement technology and applications in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.  His experience covers refrigeration, air conditioning and clean room related applications as well as other.   Prior to settling in Australia he has spent time working for ebm-papst in Germany, Korea and Shanghai in an engineering capacity.

Tiernan Humphrys is Manager Environmental Sustainability in the Victorian Department of Human Services where he leads the team responsible for embedding sustainability issues into healthcare.  Recent projects have included reviewing the Department’s Sustainability Guidelines for Capital Works, providing ESD advice on a range of healthcare projects and leading a cost-benefit analysis of GreenStar Healthcare. 

Tiernan is leading the roll-out of ResourceSmart Healthcare, an environmental capacity building program, which is being provided to over 90 healthcare agencies across Victoria over the next two years.  Tiernan also has oversight of the $7.2 million Greening Our Hospitals program which provides funding for energy and water efficiency retrofits in Victorian public hospitals.

Prior to taking up his current position in May 2008, Tiernan worked in various environmental roles at VicRoads, the British Government and with Arup, a global consultancy firm.
Tiernan is a Certified Environmental Practitioner, a GreenStar Accredited Professional and past President of the Victorian Division of the Environment Institute of Australia.  Tiernan has an honours degree in Environmental Management and a Masters in Town & Country Planning.

Ken Liddell

Ken is currently the manager of a  small unit in the NSW Health Infrastructure group that works towards improving the way NSW Health designs and builds health facilities.

Prior to this Ken has held positions that include the Asset Manager for a large regional council, the Director of the Asset Management Unit for Queensland Health, and quite a while ago as a hospital engineer.

Tony McKee

Tony McKee is the New Zealand ANZEX representative for 2009 and is President of the NZ Institute of Healthcare Engineering.  Tony has experienced the health sector from both a consultancy perspective and for the past 7 years, working within the sector itself.  He holds the position of Facilities Manager with Hawke's Bay District Health Board, which is located on the East Coast of the North Island.  Tony has also been actively involved in the development of Asset Management planning at a national level for a number of years.  He has been married to Angela for 37 years and they have four children.

Kevin Moon is a mechanical engineer who holds a nursing post graduate Certificate of Sterilization and Infection Control. He has worked within the health industry for almost 25 years, as both a hospital engineer and consultant. He now consults within the health industry on both facilities design and specialised engineering areas that cross the boundaries between clinical and engineering. His expertise is in the field of health facilities impact on infection control and the systems required for maintaining safe conditions for patients. This includes areas such as infectious diseases isolation rooms, operating theatres, clean rooms, laboratories and environmental microbiology. He regularly speaks at major conferences and has published numerous papers on the built environment’s impact on infection control.

Kevin is a Fellow of the Institute of Hospital Engineering, Australia, holds an honorary position with the Infectious Diseases Department of Austin Health and is a member of the Victorian Department of Human Services peak Infection Control Committee, the Victorian peak infection control advisory committee.

Lester is a Technical Director of AECOM Buildings and is the Australian Director of the Applied Research and Sustainability group.  He has over 20 years of involvement in all facets of building services consultancy.  With project experience gained Australia, Britain, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, New Zealand and the United States of America. 

Lester is a qualified engineer and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Engineers. 
Lester’s group provides capability and expertise in building energy simulation as well as comfort and daylight modelling.  Over the last few years Lester’s group has undertaken research and published a number of studies on reducing hospital acquired infection rates through improved ventilation design using advanced modelling techniques.

Ross Tinniswood is currently a corporate manager in asset management of medical equipment in Queensland Health.  He has professional qualifications in medical microbiology and management, and is also a company director.  Ross has served in the health care delivery system for almost 40 years as a virologist and molecular biologist.  He worked as a pathology and public health scientist for 20 years, and then put away the laboratory coat to move into laboratory supervision and management.  For the last 5 years Ross has focussed on corporate support services, particularly in the area of health technology & equipment and facility asset management, firstly with Capital Works and Asset Management Branch in Queensland Health and now manages the major equipment portfolio for the Clinical and Statewide Services Division. 

Apart from virology and asset management matters, Ross has a keen interest in quality management, strategic business planning and development, and thoroughbred horse racing.

Scott currently holds the position of Energy Manager at Royal Brisbane Womens Hospital and Royal Childrens Hospital.

His work experience includes management in industry, Health Care (QLD and NSW), mining, railways, and related industries.

His qualifications include a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) and a Grad Certificate in Health Management.

His current responsibilities include energy management on the entire site, and plant operations of the energy centre. He has overall responsibility for management of essential services and implementation of energy saving initiatives for the site.
